Chance of Tuesday tornadoes in Arkansas increases

Just days after devastating and deadly tornadoes hit the state, Arkansans braced for another round expected Tuesday in the Arkansas River Valley and western and northwestern parts of the state.

The Arkansas Razorbacks baseball game against Arkansas State scheduled for Tuesday in Fayetteville was canceled under the threat of more bad weather.

The chance of severe storms has been elevated to the moderate category, the National Weather Service reports.

Hail from the size of a quarter to a softball is possible. The winds could gust up to 80 mph and the chance for tornadoes is medium, the National Weather Service reported Monday afternoon.

Thunderstorms in northwest Arkansas are in the forecast for 1 p.m. Tuesday to 1 a.m. Wednesday, the National Weather Service reports.

The National Storm Prediction Center reports the potential for strong tornadoes Tuesday afternoon from Texas to Illinois.

At a Monday afternoon news conference at the Arkansas Emergency Management building in Little Rock, Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders gave updates on the tornadoes that hit Little Rock and Wynne Friday and left five dead statewide. She said more severe weather is possible Tuesday.

“There is a large area of Arkansas that could be impacted,” Sanders said.

She said she signed executive orders to extend tax deadlines for anyone affected by the storm damage. She said all state employees affected by tornadoes have been given paid time off.She said the Federal Emergency Management Agency opened an assistance center at 315 Shackelford Road in Little Rock Monday.
