Arlington ministry student on his way to pick up mom killed by suspected drunken driver

Keymon Jones was on his way to pick up his mother and then give a sermon Sunday morning at Bible Missionary Church in Arlington, his family said in a TV news interview and social media posts.

He never made it to his mother’s home in Arlington.

And he never showed up at the church.

Jones, 22, died Sunday morning after Arlington police say his car was hit by a suspected drunken driver at an Arlington intersection.

A 23-year-old driver who was injured in the crash is accused of intoxication manslaughter in Jones’ death.

“He was on his way to my house, and we were going to go to church with him,” Angel Jones told KDFW-TV in an interview. “My son never made it here.”

Keymon Jones was home in North Texas for the summer, taking a break from studying ministry in Illinois, KDFW reported.

Angel Jones told KDFW that she can remember her final goodbye to her son Saturday night.

“He turned around, hugged me real tight and said, ‘I love you, Momma,’” she recalled. “And I said, ‘I love you, too.’ And that’s the last words heard from my child.”

On Sunday, just after 9:30 a.m., police responded to the accident at South Collins Street and East Arbrook Boulevard.

According to witnesses, the driver of a 2007 BMW Model 328i was traveling eastbound along Arbrook at a high rate of speed, ran a red light, and hit Jones’ 2008 Ford Focus, which was legally passing through the intersection while northbound on Collins.

The impact of the crash caused the Focus to roll on its side.

Jones was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the BMW, 23-year-old Bryan Lizarzaburo Penafiel, was taken to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Based on their investigation, Arlington police believe Lizarzaburo Penafiel was intoxicated at the time of the crash.

Once he was cleared by medical staff, he was booked into the Arlington City Jail on one count of intoxication manslaughter.

According to KDFW and social media, Keymon’s family reported him missing. They called hospitals and retraced his steps.

After a day of searching Sunday, during which the family even passed the intersection where he was killed, Angel Jones was notified that her son had been killed in the accident.

A GoFundMe account has been established to help the Jones family.

“I don’t even know who I am right now,” Angel Jones told KDFW. “I never expected to bury one of my kids.”
