Arlington's cross country teams repeat as Region 2B champions

COLMAN — Arlington High School's cross country teams won region championships together for the first time ever last fall and matched the feat Wednesday by repeating in the Region 2B meet at the Sunrise Ridge Golf Course.

Arlington's boys, led by individual champion Evan Fonseca, cruised to the boys division title with a score of 11. Centerville was second at 36 and McCrossan Boys Ranch third at 39.

Arlington's girls, led by runner-up Kaelyn Ulschmid, won with a score of 14. Gayville-Volin was second at 23 and Colman-Egan third at 27.

The top three teams and 20 individuals qualified for the state meet on Saturday, Oct. 22 at Huron.

Fonseca topped a field of 43 runners to win the boys' 5,000-meter race in 17 minutes and 37.10 seconds. Other Arlington runners were Jake Burns (fourth), Riley Miller (sixth), Chase Henriksen (12th) and Lance Kaufman (15th).

Emery Larson of Chester Area won the girls' 5,000 in 17:49.37, followed by Ulschmid (19:15.34). Other Arlington runners in the 44-runner field included Halley Miller (seventh), Rachel Steffensen (eighth), Madalyn Madsen (ninth) and Kashley Goebel (32nd).

WEBSTER — Northwestern runners swept the individual titles and Frederick Area won team championships Wednesday in the Region 1B cross country meet at the Webster Golf Course.

The top three teams and 20 individuals qualified for the state meet on Saturday, Oct. 22 at Huron.

Northwestern's Lincoln Woodring won the boys' 5,000-meter race in 17 minutes and 49.91 seconds. Northwestern's Ella Boekelheide repeated as the girls division champion with a time of 20:22.53. There were 41 boys and 39 girls in the field.

Frederick Area won the boys division with a score of 19, followed by Northwestern at 19 and Deubrook Area 31. Frederick Area won the girls division with a score of 26. James Valley Christian was second at 29 and Ipswich third at 35.
