Armed Brooklyn man shot dead outside his building on Ocean Parkway in Gravesend, NYPD says

An armed Brooklyn man was shot and killed in front of his apartment building in Gravesend Thursday night, police said.

Filip Czerwczak, 29, was fatally struck at 10:35 p.m. in the upper body outside of his home on Ocean Parkway near Ave. P.

Four or five men were seen running from the scene, leaving behind numerous shell casings — and the victim was found with a 9mm pistol in his hand, police said.

It appeared Czerwczak was shot in the building’s courtyard, and then stumbled into the lobby. Medics rushed him to Maimonides Medical Center, but he could not be saved.

“I was getting ready to take a shower, and I heard a ‘Pow pow pow’, five shots,” said Jose Santiago, the super at Czerwczak’s building. “He was laying down on the floor over there by the steps.”

Santiago said Czerwczak lived in the building with his mother and grandmother.

“He was a very nice kid. He used to help elderly people, bringing food over when there was problems with the elevator,” Santiago said. “He helped people bring up their stuff. He was very helpful.”

Santiago recalled seeing Czerwczak the day before his slaying, when he came to him asking for a radiator.

“Him and my son grew up together,” Santiago, who recently lost his own son, said. “Now this is another loss for us. They were like brothers.”

The motive for the shooting was not clear, but police said the victim had five arrests, including for assault, robbery and weapons possession.
