Armed robbery suspect arrested in Houston County; guns, money, explosives recovered

HOUSTON COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) – An armed robbery Monday morning led to an arrest and the recovery of guns, money, and explosives from the suspect’s home.

Authorities said they received a call for an armed robbery at around 8:45 a.m. at the Dollar General at Gray’s Crossing.

The suspect — identified as 19-year-old Nathan Whitford — was later found after an extensive search involving a Tennessee Highway Patrol helicopter.

When investigators searched the Whitford’s home, they found cash, body armor, an AR-15 rifle, and a glock handgun he allegedly used in Monday’s robbery at the Dollar General.

Houston County Sheriff Kevin Sugg told News 2 deputies also discovered Whitford was making explosives with black powder and B-B’s. Sugg also said it appears the 19-year-old was trying to make a homemade grenade.

Whitford was taken into custody and faces a long list of charges which includes:

  • Aggravated assault (three counts)

  • Reckless endangerment (three counts)

  • Altering a serial number of a weapon

  • Possession of an explosive device

  • Possession of drug paraphernalia

  • Possession of a prohibited weapon

  • Unlawful possession of a firearm

  • Theft of property

  • Aggravated robbery

Whitford remains jailed on a $712,500 bond. No further information was released.
