The Arnold history

The Arnold Classic was co-founded in 1989 by Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jim Lorimer, long-time mayor and vice mayor of Worthington, Ohio. However, the origin of the competition dates to 1970, when Lorimer invited Schwarzenegger to compete in the Mr. World competition, which Schwarzenegger won. After winning, Schwarzenegger promised to partner with Lorimer to promote the sport of bodybuilding.

The first Arnold Classic had two events and 30 competitors. The professional men’s bodybuilding competition was known as the Arnold Classic and the professional women’s bodybuilding competition was called Ms. International.

This year marks the 36th anniversary of the Arnold Sports Festival in Columbus, now the nation’s largest sports festival featuring the world’s best physique and strength sports. Lorimer died in 2022 at the age of 96.
