Around Brick: Coronavirus Update, Council Meeting

BRICK, NJ — While the nation's attention is focused on Washington, DC, and the inauguration of Joe Biden as president, here's what's happening in Brick this week.

The Township Council and the Board of Education both meet this week.

Also, here's an update on the coronavirus numbers in Brick and Ocean County.

Ocean County remains in the orange "high risk" category due to the rates of transmission of the coronavirus. As of Monday, Ocean County had 39,787 cases, up 3,711 from 36,076 on Jan. 11. Brick has 474 new cases in that time, with 5,162, up from 4,688 on Jan. 11, according to the Ocean County Health Department.

Ocean County has had 1,447 deaths from complications of COVID-19, up from 1,298 as of Jan. 3. Brick has 207, up from 191 in that time, according to the county health department.

There have been more than 568,000 people who have tested positive for the coronavirus via PCR test in New Jersey since March 2020, including 3,511 new PCR positives reported Monday, according to the state Department of Health. As of Saturday, 3,432 people were hospitalized due to the coronavirus, with 632 in intensive care and 426 patients on ventilators, according to the state COVID-19 website. The number of COVID-19 patients in ICUs and those on ventilators has decreased over the last week.

Around town

The Township Council is scheduled to meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday. The meeting is being held virtually. The agenda includes a resolution to waive late fees on pet registrations in Brick through the end of February due to the township's free rabies clinic being set for Feb. 21. The agenda, with instructions on how to listen and ask questions during the meeting, is on the township's website.

The Board of Adjustment is scheduled to meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday, and the meeting is set to be held virtually. The board is scheduled to hear an application from Verizon Wireless for 321 Route 35 north; it appears to an application for a cell tower at the Pioneer Hose Company fire substation.

The Board of Education is scheduled to meet at 7 p.m. Thursday. They are allowing some in-person attendance but you can watch the meeting on the district's YouTube channel. The agenda, when it's posted, can be found on the district's website here.
