Hello A-J readers!

This week, we had several articles on upcoming and new businesses, along with why they decided to join the Lubbock area.

Though Rusty Taco is a franchise business, a spokesperson for the company had a local connection to the community. Naj Hassan, a senior consultant for Lion's Den and the vice president of business development for C. Larson Real Estate, discussed why he wanted Rusty Taco in Lubbock this year.

"Lubbock is one of my favorite cities in the world," Hassan said. "Back in 1981, I actually spent my first Christmas in Lubbock. I fell in love with this small town with big city amenities, yet the culture is very personable. It's a vibrant town ... and we're happy to be in Lubbock."

The new restaurant is expected to open at the former Growler USA, 6030 Marsha Sharp Freeway, in May 2023.

Uptown Cheapskate, a resale store franchise, will open their doors for shoppers around May at 5027 Milwaukee Ave. Local owner Tricia Vitela recalled how she fell in love with the business, and how she hopes to use it in a way to make the world a better place.

"I was always taught to leave a place better than you found it, and I think I can do that with people and with the environment," Vitela said. "I want to leave the world a nicer, friendlier place, and I think that this is a small way that I can do that. People will look great, feel great, get more money, and feel good about their contribution to the environment."

People looking to clean out their closets could also sell their clothes, shoes and accessories to the store once they open for sellers, possibly in late March.

Ellen Peng of Crush Teriyaki & Wok at 5109 82nd St., Unit #9, spoke on the new restaurant's quick success and how it has been a welcome surprise to her family. Kevin Lian, Peng's husband, and James Zheng, Lian's business partner, had previously owned the popular China Wok in the South Plains Mall, which closed in 2021.

"We are just a casual Asian restaurant, and we try our best to control the food quality and freshness," Peng said. "Cooking is our language. We're grateful for people being so tolerant and supportive of us. Thank you, to our customers."

Going into next week, we should have a roundup on where to find green beer and holiday events for St. Patrick's Day. I am working on getting information about several other businesses.

As always, thank you for reading and supporting the A-J.
