Around Town: On tap are Coffee with a Cop and Songwriter Sessions at The Brandy Bar

This edition of Around Town features the Hendersonville Police Department's Coffee with a Cop, along with the Brandy Bar's popular Songwriter Sessions. Also included are city and county announcements for the community for the weeks ahead.

Coffee with a Cop set for Nov. 16

The Hendersonville Police Department is inviting the community to stop by and have "Coffee with a Cop" from 8-10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 16 at Black Bear Coffee located at 318 N. Main St.

Hendersonville Police Chief Blair Myhand and other Hendersonville Police Officers will be there to have coffee and talk with members of the community. According to a press release from the City of Hendersonville, this provides a great way for the community to meet the officers who serve them.

The Brandy Bar hosts The Greybirds, Lockett and Longbottom

Hendersonville's Brandy Bar, located at 504 Seventh Ave. E., will continue its popular Songwriter Sessions on Wednesday, Nov. 16 by hosting The Greybirds, Patrick Lockett and John Longbottom, according to a press release.

The Greybirds are a band from Asheville that formed in early 2022 after escaping to the mountains from big cities such as New York, Seattle, and Atlanta, the release said.

Lockett has been writing songs since high school when he and his best friend formed a band. Now he makes Asheville home after living in the Caribbean for 20 years, where he captained his boat “Kalina” by day and played music in the bars at night.

Longbottom a fixture at the Brandy Bar and said that he's "thrilled to be included in this month's lineup."

Brevard Music Center welcomes 'Curtis on Tour with Eric Owens'

Brevard Music Center continues its Parker Concert Hall Fall Series with “Curtis on Tour with Eric Owens” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 17. Metropolitan Opera leading bass-baritone Eric Owens will be joined by colleagues and students from Philadelphia’s renowned Curtis Institute of Music, according to a press release.

They will present a program of favorite songs and arias by Johannes Brahms, Franz Schubert, Rodgers &Hammerstein, Benjamin Britten, Richard Strauss, Giuseppe Verdi and others. Tickets are priced from $35 and are available online at brevardmusic.org.

Hailed by the New York Times as a “towering bass-baritone…unbelievably moving…possessing otherworldly qualities,” and by Bloomberg News as “…one of the greatest bass-baritones in the world,” MET Opera star Owens will make his Brevard debut in a program of songs by Brahms and Schubert, as well as Broadway and operatic ensemble favorites by Verdi, Strauss, and Rodgers & Hammerstein. He will be joined by vocalists Sarah Fleiss, Lucy Baker, Joseph Tancredi, and pianists Milos Repický and Ting Ting Wong.

Political sign recycling under way

The Henderson County Environmental Programs and Parks and Recreation are partnering to provide campaign sign recycling drop-off in the Jackson Park House parking through Wednesday, Nov. 23, according to a press release. There will be one dumpster to collect both campaign signs and metal stakes. All metal stakes are accepted but people are asked to only drop off corrugated plastic signs.

Candidates may pick up their signs at any time and are asked to only recycle the political signs that they have permission to collect. Fletcher Library closed through Nov. 17

In a previous press release, dated Oct. 18, it was announced that the Fletcher Library branch of the Henderson County Public Library system would be closed for renovations from Tuesday, Nov. 1 through Saturday, Nov. 12. That schedule has been changed to a reopening on Thursday, Nov. 17.

No returns will be accepted at Fletcher during this time and no items checked out from the Fletcher Library will be due during this time.
