HOLLAND — On the night of July 15, 1930, Frank Tyndall — a combat pilot for the U.S. Army — boarded his plane and took off for Texas. He crashed in a dense fog in North Carolina. Tyndall died instantly, and was buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia.
But his story continued Tuesday, Aug. 17, at Seventy-Six Restaurant in downtown Holland, when two medals he'd earned — the Silver Star and the Distinguished Service Cross — were presented to his daughter, Mary. The medals were stolen following Tyndall's death.
The Distinguished Service Cross is the Army's second-highest military decoration for soldiers who display heroism in combat with an armed enemy force. The Silver Star is the Armed Forces' third-highest decoration for valor in combat.
Tyndall was born Francis Benjamin McCausland Tyndall on Sept. 28, 1894, in Sewall's Point, Florida, according to Air Force Magazine. Tyndall Air Force Base near Panama City was named after him.
The medals were replaced and awarded by U.S. Brigadier General Richard Miller.
