Around Town: WWII veteran to be speaker for Brevard's Veterans Day Observance

This special edition of Around Town is highlighted by a World War II veteran as a keynote speaker in Brevard and also includes information about a birthday celebration for the U.S. Marines, a blood drive at AdventHealth and a presentation by the Four Seasons Chamber Orchestra.

Cottrell to be keynote speaker on Veterans Day in Brevard

Hendersonville’s Lt. Col. Ed Cottrell, USAF (Ret.) will be the keynote speaker for Brevard’s Veterans Day Observance, which is set for 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 11 at Brevard's Courthouse Gazebo (21 E. Main St., Brevard).

According to a press release from Veterans History Museum of the Carolinas in Brevard, Cottrell served as a P-47 Fighter Pilot in WWII in Europe. He flew 65 missions in the Battle of the Bulge and will turn 101 years old on Jan. 17, 2023. He is also an Honorary Member of the Board of Directors of the Veterans History Museum of the Carolinas.

The Veterans History Museum also announced its holding a 247th birthday celebration of the United States Marine Corps on Nov. 10. The event will begin at 5 p.m. at the new Ecusta Brewing Company, located at 49 Pisgah Highway in Pisgah Forest.

AdventHealth hosting The Blood Connection

AdventHealth in Hendersonville is hosting The Blood Connection for a blood drive from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday, according to a press release.

The hospital is located at 100 Hospital Dr. in Hendersonville. The Blood Connection and AdventHealth will be following all safety protocols, including requiring face coverings and social distancing. The Blood Connection will screen all donors for COVID-19 antibodies after every completed donation, the release said.

All donors will receive a $20 e-gift card.

Four Seasons Chamber Orchestra to present its fall concert

The Four Seasons Chamber Orchestra will present its fall concert, Mes Amis,Les Animaux, at 1:30 p.m. Sunday Nov. 20 at Grace Lutheran Church in Hendersonville. The program includes Peter and the Wolf by Prokofiev, The Swan of Tuonela by Sibelius, Romance by Beach, and The Swan by Saint-Saens. Christine Lance Lee, cellist, is the featured soloist, according to a press release.

Tickets are $10 at the door, and donations will be accepted for Brother Wolf Animal Rescue.

Hendersonville branch of the AAUW to meet

The AAUW-Hendersonville Branch will hold its next general monthly meeting at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 10 at the Co-op Meeting Room on Charleston Lane. The speaker will be Dr. Audra Burtch who will share a path to better health, according to a press release.

Wellness is the doctor's specialty and she’ll focus on how to remain flexible on the journey to be vibrant no matter what your age, the release said. Those planning to attend should notify ssmreb@bellsouth.net by Nov. 8, indicating whether you want to order lunch, bring your own or attend without.
