ARPA funds put to use

May 3—COVENTRY — Rep. Joe Courtney, D- 2nd District, met with Coventry officials Monday for an overview of the town's various uses for American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds.

ARPA authorized direct support to cities and towns to support critical services and jobs in the face of sudden drop- offs in local tax revenues.

Courtney announced the projected funding allocations in March 2021.

Since then, the town of Coventry has approved more than $ 2.1 million in ARPA funding to support a range of different projects. This includes the purchase of a new ambulance for the Coventry Volunteer Fire Department, which will cost the town $175,000.

Fire Chief Bud Meyers is excited about the purchase, as the department is having challenges with the ambulance they currently have.

" This particular unit we had multiple mechanical issues with," he said.

Meyers added the current ambulance needs to be replaced because it has sustained much wear and tear over the years from the fierce terrain of the town's roads.
