‘Do you arrest everybody that comes from the bar?’ Accused DUI driver asks trooper after fatal crash: report

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A North Las Vegas man who pleaded guilty to DUI in 2018 is facing felony DUI charges for a crash that left a 21-year-old pregnant mom dead, and her boyfriend seriously injured.

Christoper Lee Walker, 32, is accused of being impaired and crashing his pickup truck into the back of the couple’s car which was pulled onto the left shoulder of I-15 near the Cheyenne Avenue off-ramp on Saturday, Jan. 13, around 2:15 a.m. The couple was waiting for roadside assistance.

According to the arrest report, a Nevada State Police trooper said evidence at the scene showed Walker was speeding, never applied brakes, smelled of an intoxicating beverage, and had slurred speech. The report said Walker refused to take Standardized Field Sobriety Tests but changed his mind when he was informed he would still be arrested for suspicion of DUI. Walker stopped a few times during the tests to say he was too cold and would fail.

Walker told the trooper he was coming from a chicken restaurant when the crash occured and said he had “two drunks of [incoherent].” The trooper said when he told Walker he was being placed under arrest Walker said “Cause I came from the bar? Do you arrest everybody that comes from the bar?” Clark County Detention Center documents stated.

Suzanne Chapel, who was pregnant, was the mother of a five-month-old baby girl, and according to her obituary, “funny and social and loved people and parties, live music and festivals.” Initially, Nevada State Police reported she was 22-years-old.

Walker is charged with felony DUI resulting in death, DUI resulting in substantial bodily harm, and failing to properly maintain a lane.

Although Walker has posted bail, he currently remains in the Clark County Detention Center as of Friday at 1 p.m. He has a preliminary hearing scheduled for Jan. 31, 2024.
