Arrest made in alleged hit-and-run death of East Hartsdale community leader

A Brooklyn man has been arrested in the weekend hit-and-run death of a prominent member of the Hartsdale community, Greenburgh police announced Sunday night.

Stephanie Kavourias, a former manager of the Hartsdale Parking Authority and former Greenburgh Planning Board member, was struck near 177 East Hartsdale Avenue just before 11:15 a.m. Saturday and later died of her injuries at White Plains Hospital Center.

The car that hit her fled the scene but was later found. The driver, 42-year-old Antonio Robles Sanchez, was charged with second-degree vehicular manslaughter and leaving the scene of an accident that resulted in death, both felonies, and misdemeanor charges of driving while intoxicated, operating a vehicle while impaired by drugs and seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, police said.

Kavourias, 65, was a longtime resident of East Hartsdale Avenue and a leader in beautification efforts there. She was mourned on the Greenburgh town website by Supervisor Paul Feiner as a committed town resident who spoke forcefully about the need for responsible planning.

“Her passing is an enormous loss to the town and to the Avenue,” Feiner wrote. “She will be missed but her contributions will always be remembered and appreciated.”

Kavourias worked for the town for several years before heading the quasi independent parking authority until 2016.

Robles Sanchez was arraigned in Town Court Saturday and ordered held at the Westchester County Jail. He is due back in court on Sept. 5.
