An arrest has been made in the Wednesday night Mitchell Street shooting that left one juvenile dead and two others in critical condition.

Kinston Police Interim Chief Jenee Spencer said the incident happened after 8:30 p.m. on Mitchell Street.

“At approximately 8:45 pm calls came into the Lenoir County 911 Center in reference to someone had been shot on the 500 block of Mitchell Street. Officers arrived to find three male subjects who had been shot. One subject has passed away from his injuries,” she said.

Updated information said Malik Dyshaun Bryant, 24, of Kinston was arrested and charged with an open count of murder and two counts of attempted first-degree murder. Bryant is being held at the Lenoir County Detention Center with no bond. KPD is unable to release the name of the 14-year-old male victim, who died at the scene, as well as the two other male victims, age 13 and age 17 because of their age, according to a release from KPD.

The two victims had been airlifted to Vidant Medical Center and are in critical condition.

“I would just like to say we are so very grateful to our community for providing as much assistance as they have. We will not tolerate this type of violence in our city and we will bring those responsible to justice,” Spencer said.

The Kinston Police Department places the highest priority on investigating crimes of violence perpetrated in our city. We will investigate such cases with no compromise for crime, and continue to seek assistance from the community we proudly serve, stated the release.
