Arrest made in fatal Camden hit-and-run

A GoPro camera that was activated during the collision helped lead police to the man suspected of killing a motorcyclist in a hit-and-run crash in Camden last week.

Camden County Police Department got permission from the family of the victim, Willieant Cooper, to view video from a camera on the motorcycle. The footage revealed a license plate for the Nissan Maxima, whose driver police said fled the scene after the crash at Mount Ephraim and Sayres avenues on Aug. 30.

The man identified as the driver, Joseph Robinson of the 1500 block of Norris Street in Camden, was also named by a witness, police said in the affidavit of probable cause. The 61-year-old Robinson was arrested Tuesday in Camden; he is currently being held in Camden County Jail on a charge of leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident resulting in death.

The charges against Robinson are allegations; he has not been convicted of any crime connected to this case.

The collision occurred around 3:30 p.m. on Aug. 30. Police responding to the scene found the victim unconscious, according to Camden County Police Deputy Chief Janell Simpson. The 41-year-old city resident was taken to Cooper University Hospital, where he later died.
