Officers found a bicycle with major damage about two miles down the road from where the pedestrian was found. Gross later passed away while receiving medical treatment for her injuries, police said.

The driver of the vehicle involved in the collision reportedly fled the scene. OPD had described the car as a silver 2013–2015 Kia Optima.

In an update released Friday, the department said its Major Accident Investigation Team took Christian Howard, a 26-year-old Riverside resident, into custody around 9 a.m. Howard has been charged on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter and hit-and-run resulting in death.
