Arsenal vs Everton LIVE score: Premier League result and reaction as Gabriel Martinelli adds fourth goal

Arsenal’s young guns were once again firing on all cylinders as Bukayo Saka’s strike and Gabriel Martinelli’s brace helped down Everton to send Mikel Arteta’s side five points clear at the Premier League summit.

No other players under the age of 22 have scored more than five Premier League goals this season but both Saka and Martinelli reached double-figures with first-half strikes in a comfortable 4-0 victory.

Captain Martin Odegaard added a third before Martinelli tapped in to put the gloss on the win and leave Arsenal in a strong position as they pursue a first title in 19 years.

This was Arsenal’s game in hand, the original match called off following the death of the Queen, and they went into the contest having lost to the struggling Toffees last month. That was Sean Dyche’s first game in charge of Everton and things appeared to be on the up, but this loss leaves the visitors inside the relegation zone.

Mikel Arteta empathises with Graham Potter amid current struggles

Mikel Arteta says he empathises with Graham Potter as he battles to save his job at Stamford Bridge – warning the Chelsea head coach not to let negativity “destroy his life”.

The Blues sit 10th in the Premier League after losing to Tottenham on Sunday and are now 26 points adrift of Arteta’s table-topping Arsenal.

Potter has won just nine of the 26 games he has managed across all competitions since replacing Thomas Tuchel in September. The former Brighton boss revealed ahead of the Spurs defeat that he and his children has received death threats.

Everton’s 2-1 victory at Southampton is their only win in their previous 13 Premier League away fixtures (five draws, seven defeats).

Sean Dyche must learn a new trick to solve an old Everton problem

19:18 , Michael Jones

It was in the build-up to a game against Arsenal when Sean Dyche showed Dominic Calvert-Lewin a reel of his goals. He urged the striker to get in the box, between the width of the posts and on the end of crosses. Calvert-Lewin responded with five attempts before half-time.

Not Wednesday’s game against Arsenal, admittedly. Calvert-Lewin is out injured, as he has been for three-quarters of Dyche’s reign and much of Frank Lampard’s. There is no timescale for his return which, given his fitness record since scoring 21 goals for Carlo Ancelotti in 2020/21, may be both depressing and sensible. Predictions of his return can appear optimistic amid seemingly endless absences.

Take out Calvert-Lewin and Everton go into the rematch of Dyche’s debut as the lowest scorers in the Premier League and with the weakest available strike force. They are the only team without a player with at least four league goals this season and one of their pair on three, Anthony Gordon, is now on Newcastle’s books. Specialist strikers have delivered just two. Both goals under Dyche have come from defenders: a freakishly brilliant effort from Seamus Coleman and a set-piece header from James Tarkowski.

Sean Dyche is working to change Everton’s mentality going into away games with the aim of improving a dismal record on the road so far this season.

Everton head to Arsenal on Wednesday night as clear second favourites against the Premier League leaders, having not won an away league match since beating Southampton 2-1 on October 1.

The Emirates is perhaps not the most likely place to end that run, but with a trip to Nottingham Forest to follow on Sunday, Dyche knows the importance of changing Everton’s fortunes away from Goodison Park.

Arteta on Arsenal’s best XI

18:53 , Michael Jones

Mikel Arteta says he doesn’t know whether Arsenal have a best XI and that the team is constantly changing and evolving as players get injured or come into great from.

“We assess that situation every single day.” said the Gunners’ boss, “The fact [is] we have options now - we have players coming back from injury giving us alternatives, which is going to be crucial.

“Players can’t maintain the same level for 10 months - it’s just impossible. We need to change and we have to generate alternatives and be more unpredictable for opponents sometimes as well. We have those options now.”

Mikel Arteta names the same Arsenal starting XI that defeated Leicester City 1-0 last time out. Leandro Trossard keeps his place in the top line with Eddie Nketiah, Emile Smith Rowe and Thomas Partey settling for spots on the bench.

Dyche on scoring more goals

18:40 , Michael Jones

Everton boss, Sean Dyche, hopes to improve his team’s goal scoring stats and he attempts to keep the Toffees in the Premier League this season.

The manager explained that he has been impressed with the team’s performances since taking over but that they need to score more in order to win games.

“It’s simple when we talk about [finding more goals] but it’s not easy to deliver,” said Dyche. “The mentality of the players has been good. We’ve got to ask questions, create different ways of affecting games and that’s what we’re looking to do but, while we’re doing that, not lose sight of the fact that the defensive shape has to still be good.

“The Premier League is unforgiving at both ends of the pitch and we’ve shown good signs of the side being tighter and more structured in its defending.

“Now it’s [about] how you can open the door when you’re attacking and, certainly, I think if you take the goals out of the game on Saturday and looking at winning two of the past three coming into it, I think we maybe even delivered a more powerful performance.

“That’s how the big, clinical moments count. That’s how important they are to change a performance and people’s view of it, because Saturday was a good performance all-round but we didn’t score the goals and we let two soft ones in. We’ve got to change that, obviously.”

Arteta on Everton

18:35 , Michael Jones

Arsenal boss, Mikel Arteta, was asked whether he wanted to get some revenge on Everton after the Merseryside clubs defeated the Gunners at Goodison Park last month.

“It’s a case of doing things better than we did when we played them a few weeks ago and earning the right to win the game.” he replied during his pre-match media duties, “Hopefully tomorrow we will play much better than we did that day.

“It’s like with any opponent. We showed them what they do, what they are about, what we expect to do to try to beat them and nothing different.

“We have to improve.”

Should Arsenal vs Everton be on TV tonight? Premier League broadcast rules explained

18:30 , Michael Jones

It is an odd quirk of the Premier League’s TV rights that tonight’s important game between leaders Arsenal and relegation-threatened Everton will not be shown live in the UK, but will be broadcast in Denmark, the Dominican Republic and Djibouti.

Pick any country or territory in the world: the Premier League lists 39 separate international TV deals on its website which cover almost every part of the globe.

But fans at home have long faced limits. Currently only 200 of the Premier League’s 380 games per season are allowed to be shown live in the UK: Sky Sports owns the rights to 128 of those, BT Sport shows 52, and Amazon broadcasts the other 20. The rest are mostly hidden behind the Saturday ‘blackout’ – a law which dates back to the 1960s preventing football from being shown on UK TV between 2:45pm and 5:15pm, in an effort to protect the attendances of lower league clubs.

Arsenal and Everton meet in a crucial Premier League fixtures for two clubs at opposite ends of the table at the Emirates Stadium.

The hosts can move five points clear of Manchester City with victory, while a positive result for Everton on the road would be a significant boost as Sean Dyche bids to keep his side up.

The encounter was due to originally be played in September, but was postponed after the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

A busy league, cup and European calendar meant finding a suitable date for the rescheduled fixture was not straight forward, but will finally take place this week, with early exits from the FA Cup for both clubs freeing space in a crowded schedule.

The match will not be live on TV for viewers in the United Kingdom, though. Here’s why:

Why is Arsenal vs Everton not on TV?

Arsenal vs Everton prediction

Arsenal vs Everton predicted line-ups

Everton: Pickford; Coleman, Tarkowski, Coady, Mykolenko; Iwobi, Doucoure, Gueye, Onana, McNeil; Maupay.

What is the early team news?

17:55 , Michael Jones

An appearance off the bench against Leicester for Thomas Partey was welcome news for Mikel Arteta, though Jorginho is likely to continue in the starting anchor midfield role.

Knee injuries leave Mohamed Elneny and Gabriel Jesus still sidelined. Arteta must decide how to assemble his forward line having begun without a specialist centre forward at the King Power Stadium.

Everton will be without Dominic Calvert-Lewin, with a thigh injury the lastest issue ailing the striker. Also on Sean Dyche’s injury list are Nathan Patterson, James Garner and Andros Townsend. Neal Maupay may remain as Calvert-Lewin’s stand in up front.

Arsenal vs Everton

15:35 , Michael Jones

Hello and welcome to The Independent’s coverage of tonight’s Premier League action as Arsenal host Everton. This fixture has been rearranged following the death of Queen Elizabeth II back in September and comes at a crucial time for both teams.

Arsenal hope to extend their lead at the top of the table to five points but defeat to Everton would leave them vulnerable to being caught by second place Manchester City. The Toffees meanwhile hope to escape the relegation zone and three points tonight would be enough to shoot them as high as 15th.

As this is a postponed fixture none of the UK broadcasters have the rights to show the match live on tv but we’ll have all the updates from the game as well as team news and more throughout the night.
