Arsenal vs Man City LIVE: Premier League latest score and updates as Erling Haaland scores at the death

Arsenal host Manchester City in a rearranged Premier League fixture that will have big ramifications on the title race when the two rivals clash at the Emirates Stadium tonight.

The Gunners have a three-point lead – with a game in hand - over Pep Guardiola’s men ahead of the first league meeting between the sides this season. Mikel Arteta’s side reached the halfway point with a total of 50 points but have dropped five points in their last two games, against Everton and Brentford, leaving the door open for City to chase them down.

The two teams clashed in the FA Cup last month with City running out 1-0 winners and the reigning champions will move to the top of the table should they defeat Arsenal again this evening.

Could tonight’s encounter determine where the Premier League trophy ends up at the end of the season?

Arsenal 1-1 Man City

20:43 , Michael Jones

48 mins: Takehiro Tomiyasu goes in the book for time-wasting when trying to take a throw in. The referee is having none of that tonight.

Jack Grealish drives the ball down the left wing and goes past the left-back. Bernardo Silva makes an underlapping run and is given the ball before lifting it over to the middle of the box.

Erling Haaland gets a head to the ball but can’t turn it towards goal.

Second half: Arsenal 1-1 Man City

20:39 , Michael Jones

There have been no changes from Mikel Arteta or Pep Guardiola at half-time. This potential title decider is delicately poised at the halfway stage with both teams getting on the scoresheet.

At this stage Arsenal would settle for a point to keep themselves ahead of City. The visitors need to pick up all three.

24 mins: Incredible finish! A long ball comes up to Erling Haaland who nods the ball over to a back-tracking Takehiro Tomiyasu. The defender is put under pressure from Jack Grealish and decides to offload the ball back to his goalkeeper.

Tomiyasu underhits the pass though and Kevin De Bruyne sprints onto the loose ball as Aaron Ramsdale comes flying off his line. De Bruyne sees Ramsdale coming and lifts it over the goalkeeper with a first time shot that curls and bounces into the back of the net.

Man City lead!

Arsenal 0-0 Man City

19:54 , Michael Jones

21 mins: Chance! That was the moment. Granit Xhaka’s ball into the middle of the Man City box is nodded away by Nathan Ake but Gabriel Martinelli recovers it.

He sends it over to Oleksandr Zinchenko arriving on the left and the left-back whips a beautiful ball back into the penalty area. Eddie Nketiah moves in between Ake and Bernardo Silva before leaping to meet the ball.

He’s got a free header and looks for the far corner but guides the effort wide of the target. Huge chance for Arsenal to go in front.

Arsenal 0-0 Man City

19:49 , Michael Jones

18 mins: There’s been a nice tempo to the start of this match with both sides creating a couple of half-chances. No-one has really had a sight on goal yet.

Arsenal 0-0 Man City

19:40 , Michael Jones

9 mins: Man City win the first corner of the game but don’t make use of it. They send it short to Ilkay Gundogan who’s cross is charged down and cleared by Eddie Nketiah.

Bernardo Silva is playing a similar role to the one he played against Aston Villa. He’s playing alongside Rodri when City have possession but dropping into the left-back position to defend when Arsenal have the ball.

Bukayo Saka has a run at him and Silva brings him down with a heavy tackle.

Arsenal 0-0 Man City

19:37 , Michael Jones

6 mins: Lovely run from Erling Haaland. He drifts out to the right wing and receives the ball before driving down the line and taking on Gabriel.

He cuts inside of the defender, weaves the ball away from Oleksandr Zinchenko then touches it into the box for Riyad Mahrez. Mahrez pulls it back into the middle wanting a teammate to arrive but Jorginho is well positioned and clears the lines for Arsenal.

Arsenal 0-0 Man City

19:33 , Michael Jones

3 mins: Chance! The first opportunity of the night comes to Arsenal. Martin Odegaard and Gabriel Martinelli both sweep down the inside left channel and combine to work the ball into the penalty area.

19:31 , Michael Jones

Grealish is pressed immediately by Takehiro Tomiyasu who seems to have been tasked with keeping him quiet tonight.

Arsenal vs Man City

19:27 , Michael Jones

Here come the players.

This is a crucial match in terms of the Premier League title. Whoever wins will take a huge step towards lifting the trophy. If the Gunners are triumphant tonight they will move six points clear of Man City with a game in hand on the champions.

If City win, they’ll draw level on points with Arsenal but will move above them in the table due to their superior goal difference.

Mikel Arteta and Pep Guardiola are old friends but tonight’s they’re rivals hoping to defeat the other. Who will come out on top?

Kick off is up next.

Will De Bruyne regain his form?

19:24 , Michael Jones

Kevin de Bruyne has failed to net in each of his last 13 Manchester City appearances in league and cup. Yet, he’s a man for big games and this is as big as it gets in the Premier League.

If he helps City win tonight, the reigning champions will finish the day top of the table.

19:21 , Michael Jones

Pep Guardiola has told his Manchester City players not to give up their Premier League title without a fight.

The champions have a chance to take top spot from Arsenal when they face the Gunners in a crunch clash at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday.

Arsenal have led the table for most of the season but have slipped up in their last two games, with defeat at struggling Everton and a draw at home to Brentford.

Second-placed City’s own form has been patchy but they got back to winning ways after a stumble at Tottenham with a comfortable victory over Aston Villa on Sunday.

Mikel Arteta accuses VAR official Lee Mason of ‘not understanding’ his job

19:05 , Michael Jones

Mikel Arteta has accused video assistant referee Lee Mason of not knowing his job after his error led to Brentford being wrongly awarded an equalising goal at Arsenal on Saturday.

Mason, who operates as a full-time VAR official for the PGMOL (Professional Game Match Officials Limited), has been stood down from duty for the next round of Premier League games following his gaffe.

He did not investigate the play immediately leading to Brentford’s equaliser at the Emirates Stadium when Christian Norgaard appeared to be in an offside position before he hooked the ball across goal for Ivan Toney to score.

But, they have only scored six goals in their past nine away games in all competitions.

Arsenal vs reigning champions

18:55 , Michael Jones

Arsenal have lost their last eight Premier League games against reigning champions, conceding at least two goals on each occasion.

Why Arsenal vs Man City is anything but a normal Premier League title decider

18:45 , Michael Jones

If Pep Guardiola was aggravated enough to name the nine Premier League clubs he felt had aggrieved Manchester City in Friday’s press conference, the feeling is more than mutual. The reaction around the competition is said to be one of “fury” about the nature of the Catalan manager’s comments. It got to the point where City executives were trying to explain it away to some counterparts as just Guardiola’s passion.

That passion nevertheless saw him name Arsenal as one of the nine and it could bring some interesting conversations at boardroom level on Wednesday. They could certainly go down some avenues people wouldn’t have anticipated.

Then again, that’s also been the story of this fixture. It was supposed to take place in October, only for the postponements from the Queen’s funeral to force readjustments. That was a point when both sides were on much better form, but it felt more relevant for Arsenal given this is all new to Mikel Arteta’s side, and there was always the danger they face City again without the reinforcements of a fine recent return.

Arsenal’s home record

18:39 , Michael Jones

Arsenal have failed to win consecutive Premier League games for the first time this season.

However, the Gunners are unbeaten in their last 13 top-flight home fixtures, winning 11 of those matches.

Arsenal vs Man City team changes

18:33 , Michael Jones

Mikel Arteta makes two changes to the Arsenal team that drew with Brentford last time out. Jorginho starts in place of Thomas Partey who doesn’t make the squad and Takehiro Tomiyasu replaces Ben White.

Pep Guardiola swaps out Aymeric Laporte for Nathan Ake in Manchester City’s only change from the team that defeated Aston Villa 3-1 in the previous outing.

Arsene Wenger explains why ‘remarkable’ Arsenal must win Premier League title this year

18:25 , Michael Jones

Arsene Wenger has told Arsenal that they must win the Premier League title this year, urging his former club to not “miss this opportunity”.

Mikel Arteta’s side have a three-point lead at the the top of the table ahead of a crucial clash withManchester City, their closest chasers.

It is now nearly 19 years since Arsenal last won the league, with Wenger’s “Invincibles” winning a third and final crown of the Frenchman’s long tenure in north London.

Having seen title challenges come infrequently during the rest of his 22-year tenure at the club, Wenger has stressed that the club must capitalise on the struggles of other more regular challengers and make the most of their chance.

Guardiola on Arsenal

18:20 , Michael Jones

Pep Guardiola says that Arsenal have been the best team in the Premier League this season and predicts that this evening’s match-up will be a battle between the two sides.

"So far, they are the best team in the Premier League.” said the City boss,

“They played an incredible first round of fixtures. We felt it, when we played them a few weeks ago, how committed and how sharp they are.

"We have to try to read the game and it will be a big, big battle. In every department you have to be ready."

Arsenal vs Man City

Manchester City have won their last six away matches against Arsenal in all competitions, as many as they had in their previous 61 visits to the Emirates and Highbury combined.

No team has ever won seven consecutive away fixtures against the Gunners.

Pep Guardiola apologises for ‘stupid comments’ about Steven Gerrard

18:10 , Michael Jones

Pep Guardiola has apologised to Steven Gerrard and admitted he was ashamed of himself for his “stupid and unnecessary comments” about the former Liverpool captain’s slip in the 2014 title race.

The Manchester City manager had mocked Gerrard’s infamous error when addressing the 115 charges the Premier League have levelled at his club and the possibility they could be stripped of some of their honours as he tried to argue their medals were won on the pitch.

City went on to win the Premier League in 2014 after Gerrard lost his footing and Demba Ba scored in Chelsea’s victory over Liverpool and Guardiola said on Friday: “I don’t know if we are responsible for Steven Gerrard slipping at Anfield. Was that our fault?”

Arteta on Guardiola

18:00 , Michael Jones

Arsenal boss, Mikel Arteta, spoke about what it’s like to face his old mentor, Pep Guardiola, when their respective teams come up against each other.

Guardiola has won six of the seven meetings against Arteta’s Arsenal with the Gunners’ only victory coming in the 2019 FA Cup semi-final on their way to lifting the trophy.

"For me it’s the team," said Arteta. "The team, the club and where we are. For me beating one manager or another, it’s not about that. It’s about beating the next opponent and in this case it’s Manchester City.

"What they have done in the last six years, they absolutely merit it, the way they play, the way they have competed, the way they have gone through difficulties. For us the challenge is to get to that level."

Guardiola ready to fight for title

17:55 , Michael Jones

Pep Guardiola says his Manchester City side will fight to regain their title despite not playing to the best of their ability this season.

"The biggest motivation is that I don’t want to drop the Premier League just because we are not who we are.” said the City boss,

"If they (Arsenal) beat us because they are better, then this is sport. I’ll be the first to congratulate them, as I’ve always done. But not because we are not there. You want it? OK, fight...take it. It’s in our hands.

"We’ll defend this title until the last day - this is what I’d like. To fight to the maximum, to try to retain the title. If we don’t, accept it, but we need to give our best. My players have to feel that every day."

Why the Premier League’s TV model could be about to change for good

17:50 , Michael Jones

When news broke in late January that JP Morgan were willing to invest €1bn in Serie A for media innovation, it sent a ripple around Premier League executives. There are more than a few who think “this is exactly the sort of shock” the competition needs to be aware of. This is how you miss out on innovation.

One club owner has already been pushing for change but has been frustrated by how slow the monolith of the club’s broadcasting model moves. It will be a feeling shared by many supporters on Wednesday night, some of whom will doubtless tune into Sky Sports and BT Sport for Arsenal vs Manchester City only to find it is on neither.

The biggest game of the Premier League season so far will instead be on the third and most recent provider, that also represent the first step into a more digital era. That is of course Amazon, whose purchase of their package means that anyone in the United Kingdom wanting to watch all of the possible televised games has to pay close to £100.

Arsenal vs Man City prediction

17:45 , Michael Jones

This very much depends on which teams will turn up: those of the past six months, or those of the past few days? Arsenal have suffered a loss of form and were below their best against Everton and Brentford, but Mikel Arteta’s side have been better than City over the course of the season.

That said, City looked sharp as they raced into a three-goal lead against Aston Villa, seemingly fired up by being charged by the Premier League. They now have the Gunners in their sights, but Arsenal will surely respond. It’s almost too close to call.

Arsenal 1-1 Manchester City.

Arsenal vs Man City predicted line-ups

What is the early team news?

Leandro Trossard could start for Arsenal after scoring from the bench against Brentford on Saturday. Gabriel Martinelli could drop out, while Gabriel Jesus remains unavailable due to injury and will not be fit to face his former club.

Erling Haaland will undergo a fitness test to determine if he can face Arsenal, after the striker picked up a knock in the win against Aston Villa. Phil Foden returned from the bench on Sunday and is fit again, but John Stones remains out.

Arsenal vs Manchester City

15:06 , Michael Jones

Hello and welcome to The Independent’s coverage of Arsenal versus Manchester City where the two teams go to-to-toe in a clash at the top of the Premier League table.

This fixture is a rearranged one and will be the first league meeting between the sides this year. The title rivals have already met once with Man City defeating Arsenal 1-0 at the Etihad Stadium in the FA Cup last month.

Arsenal started the season in fantastic form and managed to collect 50 points by the halfway stage but they’ve struggled in recent times. A 1-1 draw with Brentford and a 1-0 loss to Everton in their last two fixtures has seen the Gunners drop five points, opening the door for City to catch them.

Pep Guardiola’s reigning champions will move to the top of the table should they defeat Arsenal and collect all three points tonight. They currently trail the leaders by three but Mikel Arteta’s side do still have a game in hand. Regardless, a City victory would make the title race a close and tense affair - something Arteta will be hoping to avoid.

The match will be broadcast on Amazon Prime Video and kick off begins at 7.30pm.
