Mixed-media is the creative combination of two or more different mediums that are used to create a new and distinctive piece of art. The Art Center Gallery put out a call to artists in the New England area and selected a variety of works for a summer exhibit worth seeing. For local flavor, Michelle Ross created abstracts inspired by the natural environment and historical architecture with the work in this show focusing on imagery from the city of Dover and the surrounding areas. The work is interesting with several elements adding three dimensionality to her pieces. For work with a lot of presence look no further than Susan Rood. She uses linocut primarily and prints over acrylic and monotype to create striking images of black and white over color.

For work that is on point with the current mermaid obsession and also black and white you can find two ethereal pieces by young Artist in Residence at The Art Center, Micah Doucette. At the other end of the spectrum are seasoned, long term professional artists Kate Higley and Roland Salazar Rose. Both are well known in the New England contemporary art scene, and for good reason, as their pieces show experience and excellent understanding of the mixed-media art form. Art Center Exhibition favorites Brian Wagoner and Prospero Eaton are back with a variety of works featuring their signature striking compositions, bright colors and contemporary slightly unsettling styles.

Will Artificial Intelligence become sentient in the future, perhaps the near future? That question is addressed in the sculptures of Kirk Carter, who states, “If a human with "robot parts'' deserves civil treatment, maybe fully robotic individuals deserve the same. These pieces explore the potential for future robot feelings like loss and connection, friendship, determination and courage.” The timeliest piece in the show considering the recent decision by the Supreme Court to overturn Roe vs. Wade is Cynthia Tabeau Pritchard’s “Where Have You Gone”. She states, “I delve into constitutional issues and the importance of protecting the hard-won freedoms we enjoy as Americans. In recent years some have worked to erode those freedoms, which are illustrated by the sadness expressed in the painting.”
