New art showcased at St. Ambrose

The Catich Gallery at St. Ambrose University is presenting “Lucidity for the Home,” an exhibit of paintings and drawings of artist and St. Ambrose faculty member Christopher Reno.

With an approach reflecting Bauhaus influences, Reno’s painting process is an exploration of the improvisational, which he describes as a form of wayfinding, according to an SAU release. Drawing inspiration from the weaving techniques of Bauhaus artists like Gunta Stölzl and Anni Albers, Reno incorporates patience and design into his process, aligning more with the traditions of Bauhaus weavers than painters, the release says.

The Morrissey Gallery at St. Ambrose also is showing “Swarm,” an engaging exhibition featuring the intense and detailed drawings of Los Angeles-based artist Jen P. Harris. The exhibit showcases the evolution of Harris’s drawing practice from 2019 to 2023.

“Swarm” delves into a five-year journey of artistic exploration, capturing the essence of Harris’s creative evolution. The exhibit draws inspiration from an oscillation between elements such as structure and movement, as well as the recurring themes of the dissolution of boundaries and the repetition of mythological motifs – including monsters, trees, and beasts.

The Catich Gallery was created in 1985 as a memorial to the Rev. Edward M. Catich, founder of the St. Ambrose College Art Department in 1939 and world-renowned calligrapher, stone incisor, and artist. In 2002, this intimate gallery was re-configured to host contemporary art exhibits featuring the work of regional and national artists as well as faculty and seniors graduating with honors.
