Artemis-themed summer scavenger hunt launches at Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex

Being part of the future of space exploration just got easier — and a lot more fun — at Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex in Cape Canaveral, Florida.

The search is on with the "Artemis Mission Manual Scavenger Hunt" through Aug. 7.

In a nutshell, this educational space expedition, included with admission, offers a family-friendly activity that brings the excitement of upcoming missions close to home as guests explore the Visitor Complex in a new way.

Guests begin their Artemis-themed adventure at Guest Services (aka Information) to pick up a commemorative activity booklet.

Six education stations dotting the complex teach participants about the different stages of the Artemis program: Explore Ground Systems, Space Launch System, Orion, Lunar Landers, Gateway and Artemis Generation Spacesuit.

INSIDE GATEWAY: Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex's newest immersive deep space attraction

Inside the Gateway attraction is a flown SpaceX Falcon 9 booster, full-scale replica of Sierra Space's Dream Chaser spaceplane, and an Orion capsule that flew on NASA's EFT-1 mission in 2014. Gateway also features interactive experiences.

Space explorers watch videos and complete tasks to collect booklet stickers along the way. Once all mission stickers have been collected, the adventure continues at the Space Shop, where guests can redeem a completion prize.

It's a history-in-the-making outing as well as an interactive one.

Artemis I is envisioned as the first in a series of increasingly complex missions that NASA hopes will return astronauts to the moon and, someday, send crews to Mars.

“We are always looking for new and innovative ways to engage our young space explorers here at Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex,” said Rebecca Burgman, public relations and communications manager for the complex.

“This scavenger hunt is a perfect opportunity for kids to learn about the important Artemis missions while not only having fun, but getting the most of their visit by discovering so many different areas of the visitor complex.”

In addition to seeing real flight-flown hardware in the main gallery, equipment used for the Artemis missions is on display, such as a scale model of the NASA Space Launch System Rocket that will launch Artemis 1 and the flight-flown Orion EFT-1 capsule, which will play a key role in the missions, Burgman said.

The final weekend of the month-long event, Aug. 5-7, the Visitor Complex will host an "Artemis Block Party" celebration with street performers, DJ dance parties and activities — including prizes — from noon to 5 p.m.
