Artesia teenager killed in traffic crash with semitrailer Monday night

An Artesia teenager died in a traffic crash Monday night after a vehicle crashed into a tractor-trailer south of Artesia, New Mexico State Police said.

The 15-year-old was a passenger in a vehicle driven by a 19-year-old traveling south on United States highway 285 as the vehicle attempted to turn west on Atoka Road, read a State Police news release. The vehicle was struck by a northbound tractor-trailer.

State police did not release the name of the minor who died.

The passenger sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Office of the Medical Investigator (OMI) Monday around 6 p.m. south of Artesia, the release indicated.

The vehicle’s driver was transported to a local hospital for treatment and was later airlifted to an area trauma center. State police did not release current conditions as of Wednesday afternoon.

The condition of the semitrailer driver was not released by State police.

Alcohol was not believed to have been a factor in the crash, which is still under investigation, read the news release.
