‘Arthur’ Creator Marc Brown Just Released a Kids’ Book, And It’s a ‘Sweet Ode to a ’90s Favorite’

It kinda makes you want to say “Hey (HEY!) what a wonderful kind of day” … when the creator of one of your favorite children’s characters releases a new book. That’s right: Arthur the aardvark may be leaving TV next month after 25 years, but creator Marc Brown is capping off the show’s quarter-century run with a delightful book called Believe in Yourself: What We Learned from Arthur that’s being hailed by Kirkus Reviews as “a sweet ode to a ’90s favorite.”

We grew up with Arthur. Our kids have grown up with Arthur. And he has imparted more nuggets of wisdom into our childhood brains than … well, any other aardvark we know. The show has never shied away from difficult topics, from cancer to economic disparities to single parenting (and dating!) and same-sex marriage.

“The characters in his world are never perfect,” Brown says of Arthur in a video released by the book’s publisher Little, Brown and Company Young Readers. “They make mistakes, they get into trouble, they fight with their friends … they show you that you can learn from your mistakes and become a better person.”

Though Believe in Yourself: What We Learned from Arthur is listed as being for kids ages four through eight, it’s the kind of book that’s perfect for an Arthur fan of any age; the publisher adds that it’s a “collection of life lessons perfect for graduations and other milestones.”

We don’t need an occasion, though — the nostalgia factor alone is enough to make us hit “add to cart.”
