Arthur Doyle will not seek new term on Milton Select Board; 5 have pulled papers to run

MILTON – Select board Chairman Arthur Doyle has decided he will not seek a new term, a move that has suddenly generated a lot of interest in the April 25 town election.

Doyle said that when he ran for the select board three years ago, he intended to serve only one term. And, despite urgings of supporters to run again, he has decided to keep that pledge, he said. The decision was difficult, he said.

"If I did, by the time I finished the second term, I would be 84 years old," Doyle said.

"Acknowledging the realities associated with that fact, and the pleasures of enjoying a continuing increase in grandchildren, it is now time to turn more attention to my entire family along with sustaining other responsibilities, including completing my term as select board chair without the distractions of a reelection campaign," Doyle said.

He said his fifth grandchild is due in a few months, and all live within a few miles of him.

As of Friday, five people had taken out nomination papers for the two seats that will be on the ballot: incumbent Richard Wells, who is seeking a third term on the board; Cindy Christiansen, who has worked on aircraft noise issues; Philip Johenning, who ran for the select board two years ago; Benjamin Zoll, a former town meeting member; and Geoge Ashur, the former chairman of the warrant committee.

Christiansen has already filed nomination papers.

Prospective candidates have until March 7 to submit their nomination papers to the town clerk's office with the required 50 certified signatures.
