LACROSSE, Wis. (WLAX/WEUX) – No one expects greatness with your first few steps. Michael Jordan wasn’t “His Airness” until he had been in the league for a decade. The Beatles played The Cavern Club before they played Shea Stadium. People of a certain age recognize Morgan Freeman from Electric Company, not Shawshank Redemption. All of this is to say, leading Artist of the Month with The City of La Crosse during one of the slower months in the Arts calendar may be forgiven if I can live up to my own expectations.

January seems to be a runway for La Crosse’s artists. A run-up to an explosion of activity in February. Theatrically, Viterbo’s Tar Beach has been rehearsing to open tonight (2/2/24) at the Fine Arts Center LaCroix Black Box Theatre; UWL is currently in rehearsals for “Art in Motion: A Concert of Dance” which opens on February 16th. LCT opens The Last Five Years on February 8th in the Veterans Studio Theatre and The Muse has My Way: A Musical Tribute to Frank Sinatra opening on February 16th. The Artsiders have a call to artists out for their March show and countless tattoo artists have opened, or announced when they are opening, their scheduling books. Musically, it was announced that The Wailers are coming to Town with local groups TUGG and Nobody’s Dope opening for them. January saw Gregg “Cheech” Hall return from recording an exciting new album in Nashville and Charlie Boy announced that they would be debuting a brand-new video, for the song Curmudgeon, on February 3rd at the Rivoli.

What I’m getting at is January wasn’t a great month to SHOW you how and why the La Crosse Arts Community is thriving, but the rest of the year is already shaping up to be really special. In fact, that video release is the perfect opportunity to introduce the next Artist of the Month. Some of the most beautiful and vivid pictures of the Coulee Region, and its different seasons, have been captured through the lens of this artist. He has a knack for catching interesting angles and colors of otherwise innocuous moments or parts of a whole. Inspired by the work of Prof and Adam Faeth alike, he has a way of storytelling with color, angle and light. He hopes to put together a photo book and his big goal is to make his short film. For the record, I would kill for a copy of that book and I am an actor that can provide a headshot and resume if necessary. Just… fyi.

Without further ado, your WI Proud, Artist of the Month for February 2024 is Dylan Overhouse of Dylan Overhouse Productions
