Artist pays tribute to poetic pioneer Maya Angelou at popular Atlanta Park

An artist is paying tribute to an iconic poet and civil rights activist.

Stan Herd, a crop artist and painter, is currently installing a tribute to poet and civil rights activist Maya Angelou in Freedom Park.

The “And Still I Rise” earthwork portrait of Angelou will be at the meadow near Moreland Avenue.

NewsChopper 2 flew over the area Thursday morning.

Once it is installed, the artwork will be there for about two weeks.

The City Park Department and the Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs sponsored the project.

Angelou passed away in May 2014. She was 86.
