Murderous 'Sweeney Todd'

The bloody "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street" will open Friday and run through Sept. 10 at Rubber City Theatre, Paul A. Daum Theatre, 228 E. Buchtel Ave., Kolbe Hall, the University of Akron.

The 1979 musical, starring Jason Eno as the title character and Natalie Zenzcak as dotty pie shop owner Mrs. Lovett, features music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. In this story, Todd seeks revenge against the lecherous Judge Turpin, played by Marc Moritz.

'Sound of Music'

The Blossom Music Festival season finale will feature "The Sound of Music" Labor Day weekend, with the semi-staged production running 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Blossom Music Center, Blossom Music Center, 1145 W. Steels Corners Road, Cuyahoga Falls. The musical, directed by Victoria Bussert, features singers from the Baldwin Wallace University musical theater program. Accompanying them will be the Akron Symphony Orchestra in its Blossom Music Festival debut, led by Broadway conductor Any Einhorn.

Trombone Shorty

Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews & Orleans Avenue will perform at 8 p.m. Friday at E.J. Thomas Hall, 198 Hill St., the University of Akron. Whiskey Painters exhibit

The 41st annual Whiskey Painters of America Exhibition and Art Sale, presented by the Cuyahoga Valley Art Center, continues through Oct. 6 at 2131 Front St., Cuyahoga Falls. A free artist reception will be in the main gallery 5:30 to 7 p.m. Sept. 23, when the public is invited to celebrate the artists and enjoy hors d'oeuvres and drinks.
