Arts picks: Haitian music, voguing in Akron, 'Swan Lake,' 'Romeo and Juliet' in Cleveland

'Winds of Change'

Cleveland chamber ensemble Les Delices will present the program "Winds of Change" at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Akron Public Library, featuring works by contemporary Haitian choral composer Sydney Guilliaume. The Firestone High School Symphonic Choir and Kent State Chorale will perform Guillaume's "This, Too, Shall Pass" and "Tchaka."

Local Flavor: River Merchant offers great view, satisfying food in Kent

The concert centerpiece will be the commissioned quintet "A Journey to Freedom," inspired by the history and current turmoil of Haiti. Works by French-Caribbean composer Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de St. Georges and Luigi Boccherini also will be performed.

Work in progress

Choreographer Alexandra Barbier of Urbana, Illinois, will have a free public work-in-process showing of her new solo work, "Stations of Black Loss," from 9:45 to 10:20 a.m. Friday at Guzzetta Hall, Studio 194, 228 E. Buchtel Ave. at the University of Akron.

Barbier, who explores queer Black dance vernacular such as twerking, waacking and voguing, is the 2022 Community Commissioning Residency artist for the National Center for Choreography - Akron (NCCAkron) and the UA School of Dance, Theatre and Arts Administration.

'Swan Lake'

The Cleveland Ballet will open its season with "Swan Lake" at 8 p.m. Friday and 7 p.m. Saturday at the Connor Palace, 1615 Euclid Ave., Playhouse Square, Cleveland. "Swan Lake" tells the story of Prince Siegfried and the timid but beautiful Swan Queen, Odette.

Star-crossed lovers

Great Lakes Theater will present the world's most enduring love story, Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet," opening 7:30 p.m. Friday and running through Nov. 6 at the Hanna Theatre, 2067 E. 14th St., Playhouse Square, Cleveland. Benjamin Bonenfant and Angela Utrera star as the title characters.
