Twin Lights Volunteer Day in Highlands

Construction of the Twin Lights, overlooking the Shrewsbury River, Sandy Hook Bay, Sandy Hook and New York City, was completed in 1862.
Construction of the Twin Lights, overlooking the Shrewsbury River, Sandy Hook Bay, Sandy Hook and New York City, was completed in 1862.

At around 250 feet above sea level, Twin Lights Lighthouse is one of the highest points on the Eastern seaboard with a clear view of the Raritan Bay, Atlantic Ocean and New York City skyline from either tower.

Named a National Historic Landmark in 2006, the lighthouse was first built in 1828, brandishing two towers to distinguish it from the nearby Sandy Hook Lighthouse. In 1898, it became the first U.S. primary lighthouse to generate its own electricity. At that point in time, the south tower housed the brightest light in the country.

The Twin Lights Historical Society is a nonprofit organization formed by volunteers in Highlands that helped save the lighthouse from ruin in 1955. The Society is a Friends Organization with the New Jersey State Park Service, which owns and operates the site. Its mission? To share the illustrious history of Twin Lights.

The society is looking for new volunteers, and Saturday is a good opportunity to see if the group is right for you.

Volunteer Day begins at 10 a.m. with a light breakfast, featuring a recap of the past year’s activities; a preview of programming and events for the 2023 season; and some history tidbits. Attendees can then take a free tour of Twin Lights, enjoy a lunchtime barbecue, and earn a shot at a $100 prize raffle.

Register here.
