Ascension Parish school buses getting AC units installed before next school year
BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — School buses in Ascension Parish are getting AC units installed so drivers and students will no longer experience those hot summer days while riding to school.
The majority of the fleet will have AC units by the next school year.
“Drivers and students and parents did complain, but it was a needed thing in South Louisiana,” Aubrey Yates, transportation supervisor for Ascension Parish Schools said.
Yates said 177 buses will get an AC unit and 30 have already been fixed. He said at least 20 of those buses will be without a unit. However, Yates said the issue is on the school board’s agenda.
New redistricting guidelines approved by Ascension Parish School Board
“We plan to go to the board to ask them to, you know, for a remedy,” Yates said.
He said the units will make it more comfortable for students and keep more drivers behind the wheel.
“We’ll be able to retain drivers and actually recruit drivers with having AC on the buses and also, the students will be safer,” Yates said.
