Asheville man dies in head-on Sweeten Creek collision; pulled into traffic, police say

ASHEVILLE - A city man was killed in a head-on collision on Sweeten Creek Road on the afternoon of Jan. 21, according to a news release from the Asheville Police Department.

Police are seeking help from the public in their search for information about the fatal motor vehicle collision near the 75 block of Sweeten Creek Road near Caribou Road.

APD identified the driver as Andrew Benjamin Freeman, 32, of Asheville. Freeman was the driver of a 2009 Honda Civic who pulled into oncoming traffic at high speed, according to the APD news release.

Freeman was driving northbound when he tried to illegally pass a vehicle, the release said. That’s when he collided head-on with a 2018 Nissan Armada in the southbound lane. The accident occurred around 4:27 p.m. on Jan. 21.

The driver of the Nissan Armada was taken to Mission Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Freeman was also taken to Mission Hospital. He did not survive the collision. His next of kin have been notified.
