Ashland commissioners vote to give Savannah Block Grant funding for sidewalk project

KEY ACTION: Clerk Nikki Hiller recommended, and Commissioners Mike Welch and James Justice approved, that the Village of Savannah be awarded $139,680 for a Community Development Block Grant sidewalk project.

Hiller said she received applications from Bailey Lakes, Hayesville, Perrysville and Savannah this year. The funds for Savannah will be used for new village sidewalks.

DISCUSSION:  “I would like to award the CDBG funding to the Village of Savannah for sidewalk projects,” Hiller said. “And I have invited (Savannah Mayor Tom Kruse) to explain how that funding would help this area.”

“Some of our sidewalks are 175 years old,” Kruse said. “It is going to make a big difference. It is going to work very, very well for the village and we are very much appreciative Nikki to be selected.”

“I noticed that after Polk got theirs (new sidewalks),” Welch said. “Kids were out on their bicycles.”

Other action, commissioners:

  • Approved a one-year service agreement with Smart Digital for maintenance of the camera system at Job & Family Services.

  • Approved a partnership agreement with the City of Ashland for the 2023 Community Housing Impact and Preservation Program (CHIP).

  • Approved travel for Solid Waste District coordinator Jim Skora and Auditor Cindy Funk in May and June.

  • Accepted an $8,350 quote from S.A. Comunale for phase monitor protection on the courthouse HVAC units.

  • Approved a $5,000 donation to the Friends of the Ashland County Park District to assist with construction of the Davy McClure Outdoor Education Center.

  • Approved advertising to set the 2024 budget hearing for 9:15 a.m. June 22.

  • Authorized the appointment of 19 people as Local Emergency Planning Committee members effective June 1, 2023-May 31, 2025.

  • Approved a change order for $125,376.16 with Simonson Construction for outdoor concrete at the dog shelter.

  • Voted to allow Tri-County Jobs for Ohio’s Graduates to become the new provider for the remaining SFY 2023 and SFY 2024 Ashland County Comprehensive Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act, Youth Comprehensive Case Management and Employment Program, and/or Temporary Assistance for Needy Families Program, as recommended by Peter Stefaniuk, Director of JFS.

Commissioners will meet at 9 a.m. Thursday, May 18 in the Commissioner’s Conference Room on the second floor of the County Office Building. The meetings are open to the public. They are livestreamed on the Ashland, OH County Government Facebook page.
