Ashland County 2023 election: These elected positions have a race - see who's running

With the Nov. 7 Ohio general elections just a few weeks away, there's no shortage of the campaigns being run throughout Ashland County.

While the majority of Ashland County's townships have contested races, the City of Ashland does not have any contested races for the 2023 general election. Mayor Matt Miller is not up for election this year. His next election is in 2025.

In the meantime, Judge John Good is looking to be reelected as judge of municipal court. Larry Paxton is seeking to return to his role as Director of Finance while Richard Wolfe is looking to the voters to have him resume his role at the city's Director of Law. Dan Lawson is running for Council at Large and Steve Workman going for the Member of Council 1st Ward role.

For the Ashland City School's Board of Education race, Greg Summers and Rob Walsh are running for the open member positions. Voters will have the option of voting for both of them in this election cycle.

Here is a list of candidates who are running opposed as well as the descriptions for the position each candidate is seeking.

Board of education races in Ashland County

Members of the Board of Education act in a governance role for the school district.

Crestview Local Schools Board of Education - Those who are running for the Crestview Local Schools Board of Education are incumbent members David Kissel, David Brennan and Debbie Reidy as well as newcomer Evan Stuart. Only three candidates can be selected.

Mapleton Local Schools Board of Education - Voters will be selecting three out of the four candidates for the Mapleton Local Schools Board of Education. Incumbent member Vince Hartzler is running as well as newcomers Kathy Goon, Fred Hartzler, and Jay Maggard. Only three candidates may be selected by voters.

Other Board of Education seats are not contested or have the same number of candidates as available seats.

Mayoral races in Ashland County

The mayor will be enforcing all laws within the city/village as well as sign all commissions, licenses, and permits that are granted.

Savannah Village - Incumbent Thomas Kruse is running against Doug Yoho in the 2023 mayor's race.

Perrysville Village - Incumbent Heather Mullinnex is seeking re-election. Steve Goines and Bob Zakutni are challenging her.

Jeromesville Village - Incumbent Randy Spade is running against Kevin Clark in the 2023 mayor race.

The other mayoral races in Ashland County in 2023 are not running opposed.

Member of council in Ashland County villages

Those on the council are in charge with governing the village.

Perrysville Village - Incumbent Lonnie Harris and challengers Chris Clady and Larry Sprang are on the ballot. Voters will be able to select two out of the three candidates.

Hayesville Village - No incumbents are running in this election. However, Tucker Conrad, Charles Gardner, and Todd Miller are on the ballot. Voters can vote for two of the three candidates.

Savannah Village - Incumbents Holly Farr and Sarah McBride are up against Scott Mumaw. Voters will select two out of the three candidates.

Township fiscal officer

The township fiscal officer handles all the fiscal responsibilities within the township. This includes paying bills, payroll, and receiving revenue. This position also maintains records of proceedings in all of the township's board of trustee meetings.

Clear Creek Township - Incumbent Nicholas Stuart is being challenged by Teri Yoder.

Troy Township - Incumbent Fred Lowery is facing Ashley Harris for the elected position.

Township trustees

Township trustees are the official authorities of the township. They are elected to oversee roads as well as fire and police departments, cemeteries, parks and recreations, and zoning.

Mohican Township - Incumbent Steven Moffett and Daniel Benner are on the ballot. Voters may only vote for one candidate.

Perry Township - Incumbent Kent McGovern is seeking re-election and is facing James Uhler. Voters may only vote for one candidate.

Ruggles Township - Incumbent George Ashton is going up against Eric Bohland. Voters may only vote for one candidate.

Sullivan Township - Incumbent Glen Goff is running against Neal Durfey and Robert Gibson. Voters may only vote for one candidate.
