Ashland ice rink delays opening

Nov. 16—The opening of Ashland Rotary Centennial Ice Rink will be postponed at least one week.

The seasonal ice rink in Lithia Park, at 95 Winburn Way, Ashland, won't open this Saturday as previously scheduled due to warm daytime temperatures predicted for next week, the city of Ashland reported on its website.

The news advisory expressed the hope of potentially opening Saturday, Nov. 26.

Parks and Recreation Director Micheal Black confirmed uncooperative weather was part of why the opening was postponed, but he said there's also another problem.

"It's a couple of things. It's not just ice; it's staff. It's not easy to fill positions," he said.

Staff for the ice rink are seasonal workers hired new every year, he said, and Ashland Parks and Recreation isn't immune to the labor shortage.

The hope is to push the opening off just one week from the intended start date, he said.
