ASHLAND - A large crowd packed into the seats and throughout the lawn at the Guy C. Myers Memorial Bandshell on Sunday evening for its popular summer concert, "Pops in the Park."
Performed by the Ashland Symphony Orchestra, the concert is part of the lineup of the Bandshell's summer concert series.
This was also the debut concert for the ASO's newest music director, and conductor, Michael Repper, who enthusiastically led the orchestra as musicians played familiar tunes such as "Music from Guys and Dolls," "America the Beautiful" and "God Bless America." Veterans were invited to stand for the playing of the "Armed Forces Salute."
Highlights of the program also included a perennial favorite, the playing of Piotr IIyich Tchaikovsky's "1812 Overture," which is accompanied by the firing of cannons from Battery D, 1st Ohio Light Artillery, and the audience popping brown paper bags to mimic cannons firing.
The program came to a close with audience members lighting sparklers and singing along to "God Bless America," and finally the playing of "Stars and Stripes Forever," once again accompanied by Battery D.
