News in Brief

Volunteers are needed for an annual program that provides tax-filing assistance in Ashland. The program is sponsored by the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) Foundation in cooperation with the Internal Revenue Service.

Volunteers are required to complete a training course on taxation. The AARP tax-aide program helps low and middle-income taxpayers with special attention provided to those individuals aged 60 and over.

New volunteers are provided training in Ashland after registration, while group training begins in January and is held at the Wooster Community Center, 241 S. Bever St., Wooster. An IRS representative may be present during some of the training, and all course materials and computers are provided.

Volunteer preparers must complete the training program and pass an open-book examination on tax-related issues. After completion of the training, volunteers commit to providing taxpayer assistance two days a week February-mid-April.

The Ashland tax-aide program provides service to hundreds of taxpayers yearly. Returns are filed electronically making computer literacy essential.

Personal training as well as tax preparation is provided at the Christ United Methodist Church, 1140 Claremont Ave., Ashland.
