Ashley Hinson: I stand up for Iowa taxpayers and working families

People often ask me why I ran for office, and I have two answers: Max and Jax, my 11- and 9-year-old sons. I ran for Congress in 2020 because I was deeply concerned about the direction our country was headed and what it meant for the next generation. I ran to stand up for working families and taxpayers, keep our communities safe, and ensure Iowa’s rural and agriculture communities have a seat at the table. And I’m running again because of the destruction that total Democratic rule in D.C. has caused — we need a check on the Biden administration.

The results of the unchecked Joe Biden-Nancy Pelosi agenda are clear: rampant inflation and record high prices, $5 gas and energy shortages, a spike in violent crime, open borders, and America taking a backseat on the world stage.

The chaos and dysfunction in D.C. has hurt us all, and this campaign is about the struggles Iowans tell me they’re facing every single day. At a gas station in Alburnett, we met a woman who hadn’t filled up her gas tank more than $5 or $10 at a time in over a year because she couldn’t afford it. During one of my telephone town halls, an elderly man told me that he was scaling back groceries for himself and his wife because food is too expensive. Sheriffs and law enforcement across Iowa have told me about the increased drugs coming here — one officer told me about a recent drug bust with enough fentanyl to kill every single Iowan. Iowans cannot afford another two years that look like the last two.

My top priority in Congress is standing up for taxpayers and working families. That means calling out reckless spending, bringing federal resources back home to Iowa, and making sure you can keep as much of your hard-earned paycheck as possible. It means making sure every taxpayer dollar you send to the federal government is accounted for and that Washington serves you, not the other way around.

That’s why I’ve stood strong against trillions in wasteful spending and introduced legislation to expand the child tax credit for working parents. As a member of the House Appropriations Committee, I’ve fought to bring taxpayer dollars back home to be reinvested in Iowa priorities like infrastructure, child care, and emergency services, rather than the out-of-touch priorities of Biden and Pelosi. While Washington Democrats and my opponent believe the government knows how to spend your paycheck better than you do, I believe it is your money, not the government’s money.

There is too much at stake in this upcoming election to sit on the sidelines — it’s a choice between two more years of Nancy Pelosi as speaker, or a common-sense check on this administration. Bipartisanship, balance, and accountability are the only way forward. Together, we can take back control of our lives, rebuild our economy for all Iowans, and get our country back on track.
