Asian-American mom talks race with her daughter

but also be aware of racism and discrimination

"And, you know, she's seven, so I tried to explain it as best I can for her to kind of understand and not scare her as well. So, yeah, she was very receptive to it and she understood what was happening, and she asked me questions back and it was a really good conversation that I think we needed to have."

Anti-Asian hate crimes have skyrocketed in the U.S.

largely as the result of Asians being blamed for the coronavirus

which was first identified in Wuhan, China in late 2019

(SOUNDBITE) (English) STEFANY STUBER, 40-YEAR-OLD KOREAN-AMERICAN, SAYING:"She asked me why somebody would would hurt her people just because they were Asian. She said, because I'm Asian, so would somebody want to hurt me just because of the way that I look? And I said, sadly, I don't know. I was like, right now because of the comments that were made about Covid and calling it a China flu that, you know, a lot of people are looking at Asian people in a different way, and that mommy's heard things. People have said things to me about it."
