Asian small-clawed otter pups born in Japan

STORY: Toba Aquarium in Mie prefecture said on Monday (June 12) one male was born on May 23 and the other pup, a female, on May 24. They weighed about 3.2 ounces (93 grams) and 2.7 ounces (79 grams) respectively at time of birth.

Two other pups in the same litter born to a resident otter, but they died soon after birth and the surviving two are being raised by aquarium staff.

The Asian small-clawed otter is the smallest otter species in the world, native to South and Southeast Asia and is about 50-60 cm in length from head to tail.

Threatened by habitat loss, pollution and illegal pet trade, their populations are in decline.

They are especially popular in Japan for their adorable and charming faces. Toba Aquarium plans to hold the first public outing for the two pups in late July.
