Can a ChatGPT poem be mistaken for one written by a person?

Perhaps, if you don't look too closely, the poems won't be recognized as AI-generated. But there are a few strange quirks in each one. For example, in one poem, ChatGPT describes both Cincinnati's skyline and the Ohio River as "like a dove." In another, the program rhymes "bright" with "bright."

There are also similarities in the structure of each poem. Every poem includes 8 rhyming couplets, and has some variation of the following couplet, albeit with small tweaks: "So on this Valentine's Day, I want to say/ My love for you, [subject], will never fade away."

Should you use ChatGPT to write a love poem?

While ChatGPT might be helpful in finiding inspiration, you might be better off writing a poem yourself.

In the AI's own words, when asked how it generates the poetry, it said this: "The model has been trained on a vast amount of text data, which includes examples of poems, romantic phrases, and sentiment analysis. When given a prompt, such as 'write a Valentine's Day poem about [subject],' ChatGPT uses this training to generate text that is likely to be a Valentine's Day poem about the specified subject. ... [and] may also draw upon common themes, structures, and phrases associated with Valentine's Day poetry."

This means that the AI is essentially mashing together concepts and phrases from existing generic poems, though it is doing it as intelligently and as grammatically correct as it can. In its explanation, the AI goes on to say, "it's important to note that while the output of ChatGPT can be very good, it's not perfect and may contain errors or inaccuracies."

So you might be better off thinking of a poem yourself, from the heart. It might not be perfect, but it will undoubtedly be more personal.

And you at least won't rhyme "bright" with "bright."
