Assassin's Creed Mirage has debuted with a decent Metacritic score.

Set in 9th century Baghdad, the latest in the long-running series takes inspiration from the earlier games by offering a more compact open-world experience compared to the likes of Odyssey and Valhalla.

The reviews have been mostly positive. On Metacritic at the time of writing, the game has a score of 77 on PS5 (57 reviews), 76 on Xbox Series X (16 reviews), and 79 on PC (8 reviews).

The current OpenCritic score is 76, based on 77 reviews.

Many reviewers appreciated the fact that Mirage is a shorter and more focused game that places a heavier emphasis on stealth. The city of Baghdad has also been described as a joy to explore, though the story and characters have been criticised by several critics.

Here's what the reviews have been saying:

IGN - 8/10

"What the story lacks in depth it makes up for with its straightforward quest progression and fast pacing. Though there's no big standout 'wow' moment, Baghdad is a beautiful location in its own right, and the world’s detail is focused inward, making every alley and hovel feel well traveled and full of detail and history."

GameSpot - 6/10

"Mirage does get back to the basics that first defined the series by refocusing on social stealth and making it fun to learn about a city's history, but a weak cast of characters keeps it from reaching the same heights as some of its earliest predecessors."

Eurogamer - 4/5

"If this feels like a throwback to the earlier Assassin's games, Mirage is pretty open about it. This is a game about sneaking and stabbing people quietly and efficiently and then hiding their bodies in bushes or out of sight behind some crates. It's been a while, frankly."

Kotaku - Unscored

"Mirage offers a return to a kind of open-world game we don’t see as often, a smaller adventure unlike anything Ubisoft has released in years. An open-world action game that most players will finish in a weekend or two.

"For some, that sucks. For others, Assassin’s Creed Mirage will be a wonderful gift."

Polygon - Recommended

"Mirage may very well be my favorite entry in the franchise (after Origins). By focusing on stealth and assassinations-as-puzzles, and keeping the map and missions small but layered, Mirage has shed the bloat of its recent predecessors.

"The result is a more refined game, from a studio that knows when to exercise restraint, and when to let Basim display his violent talents."

The Guardian - 4/5

"In returning to its roots, Ubisoft has made a more focused Assassin’s Creed, one that those with limited time have a hope of completing.

"Ubisoft lets down the liveliness of its world with a well-trodden story, but after a string of formless open-world games, Assassin’s Creed Mirage is a stab in the right direction."

Slant Magazine - 2.5/5

"While locations like an academic symposium and a grand auction set the stage for compelling assassination missions, and you’re given several ways to get the job done, there’s little freedom or discovery to them."

GamesRadar+ - 4/5

"Despite its more compact vision, it manages to encapsulate exactly what it means to be an Assassin's Creed game. From the more classic costuming to the focus on stealth and streamlined parkour, this is a beautiful return to the classic games."

Assassin's Creed Mirage is out on October 5 on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
