  • Michael Walek and Todd Bezold are currently on display from through March 31. The exhibit features seascapes, landscapes, and interiors, as well as paintings of Egypt, Italy, Portugal, Maine, Idaho, and Kentucky.

  • Rick Fox will display oil on canvas artwork from April 3 to July 3. “Improvisation and invention are important to me. I can’t get enough of juggling the thrills and surprises that are born out the translation of a direct and emotional response to the physical world. Painting sets me up to witness the joys of fleeting color relationships and the excitement of colliding tectonic shapes,” shared Rick.

  • Nelson Linscott will display his photography from June 30 to Sept. 29. “I am an amateur photographer from Kittery, Maine. I’m 67 years old, retired and I live with my rescue dog, Luna who came from Puerto Rico. I use an entry level camera that was given to me, and hope audiences enjoy my photographs of Maine scenery.”

  • Bill Paarlberg will display artwork from Oct. 2 to Dec. 29. Bill paints watercolors and draws the Famous Monsters of Portsmouth. He writes about artwork, edits a newsletter on public relations measurement, and now and then he posts to the blogs Illustrating Portsmouth and Illustrating Mayto.

Although the York Hospital Café has not yet reopened to the community for indoor dining, caregivers, patients and visitors may view the artwork while picking up take-out orders, or in the online art gallery at https://www.yorkhospital.com/online-art-gallery/.  The online gallery also includes works from previous exhibitions.

Newsweek names Wentworth-Douglass among best hospitals in U.S.

DOVER – Wentworth-Douglass Hospital has been named among the best hospitals in the United States for the third straight year, according to Newsweek’s 2023 “World’s Best Hospitals” rankings published today.

Wentworth-Douglass was ranked 189th of the 414 American hospitals rated on the publication’s US-based list – it’s highest ranking ever. The hospital was ranked 191st in 2022, 217th in 2021, 196th in 2020. The only other Seacoast hospital on the list is Portsmouth Regional at #414.

“It’s very humbling to once again be ranked by Newsweek – especially in the Top 200 once again,” said Jeff Hughes, President and COO of Wentworth-Douglass Hospital. “All our rankings and awards are a testament to our employees and their unwaivering commitment to our patients and our community. I couldn’t be more proud that they are receiving this national recognition.”

The publication also noted that Wentworth-Douglass performed “above average” in its infection prevention measures.

The rankings, which debuted in 2019, were compiled by market and consumer data company Statista. In the 2023 edition, 28 countries and over 2,300 hospitals are featured in total, the most extensive and international edition to date. Every hospital in each country was rated by a score, which is based on four data sources: recommendations from medical experts (doctors, hospitals managers, health care professionals), patient satisfaction data, hospital quality metrics, and Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) implementation surveys.

“The world's best hospitals consistently attract the best people and provide the best outcomes for patients as well as the most important new therapies and research. Of all the hospitals in the world, relatively few can do all those things year in and year out. The best belong to a very exclusive club,” said Nancy Cooper, Global Editor in Chief of Newsweek on the publication’s website.“The goal of this study is to provide a data-based comparison of hospital reputation and performance across countries. We hope this will be useful to patients and families seeking the best care for themselves and loved ones, as well as to hospitals as they benchmark themselves against their peers.”

BRENTWOOD – The Ernest P. Barka Assisted Living Community, owned and operated by Rockingham County, New Hampshire, is celebrating its 20th anniversary this month.

Over the last two decades, the Ernest P. Barka Assisted Living Community has kept a tradition of providing comfort and care to its residents. As one of the only assisted living facilities in the state of New Hampshire that accepts Medicaid, the community helps vulnerable older adults in need of supportive housing. Residents have access to an experienced staff of dedicated professionals and a robust host of amenities such as wellness programming and transportation services. The community is located within the Rockingham County Rehabilitation and Nursing Center complex, which offers short-term rehabilitation and long-term care services for seniors.

“The Ernest P. Barka Assisted Living Community provides essential services for older adults in this region,” said Senior Director of Long-Term Care Services, Jason Smith. “Our goal is to help residents live more independently with access to a safe, secure living environment that feels like home.”

Planning for the community began in 1999 after the Rockingham County delegation conducted a marketing survey that revealed the need for more senior housing in the area. When the community opened in March of 2003 the 30 available beds were quickly filled. Recognizing the demand for affordable housing for older adults in Rockingham County, the county completed a renovation project in 2006 that added 14 additional resident rooms. The assisted living community is named after Rockingham County Commissioner Ernest P. Barka, who served as a commissioner for 26 years before his death in 2002.

This landmark will be celebrated with a 20th anniversary party for residents, staff, and families in the spring. The celebration will be in conjunction with the grand re-opening of newly renovated resident common spaces.

“We are so proud of what we’ve been able to accomplish over the last 20 years,” said Rockingham County Commissioner Kate Coyle. “We’re excited to celebrate this milestone and look forward to many more years of providing quality care to our residents.”
