Dropped out: No. 15 Auburn (16-5) after losses to Texas A&M and West Virginia; No. 19 UConn (16-6) after a loss to No. 13 Xavier; No. 20 Miami (16-5) after a loss to Pittsburgh; No. 25 New Mexico (19-3) after a loss to Nevada.

Entered: Indiana at No. 21 after five straight wins; San Diego State at No. 22 after four straight wins; Boise State at No. 24 after improving to 7-4 in Quads 1-2 and 7-4 in road/neutral games. Illinois at No. 25 after winning six of the past seven Big Ten contests.

Also considered: Creighton (13-8), N.C. State (17-5).

Analysis: Marquette rises eight spots, mostly because the Golden Eagles were woefully under-ranked last week…Baylor also rises eight spots after beating Kansas and Arkansas...Charleston stays on my ballot because there is no shame in losing a four-point decision to a good Hofstra squad…tough to rank the Big 12 teams because the league is so good that teams are bound to knock each other off. Bottom line: Can’t penalize a loss too severely…Mid-majors dominate the bottom part of my ballot because as we relearn every March, there is no gap between the best mid-majors and good high-majors.

By conference: Big 12 (6), Big East (3), Big Ten (3), ACC (2), Mountain West (2), Pac-12 (2), SEC (2) West Coast (2), American (1), Colonial (1), Conference USA (1).
