Assumption University tabs Eric Gobiel as director of athletics
WORCESTER — Assumption University has hired Eric Gobiel as its new director of athletics.
Gobiel has served in the same position at Nichols since July 2019.
“In appointing Mr. Gobiel as the university’s next director of athletics, Assumption recommits itself to an athletic program that provides student-athletes the opportunity to compete at the highest levels of NCAA Division 2 athletics and pursue an education that will awaken in them a sense of wonder and purpose,” Assumption interim president Greg Weiner said. “The university community looks forward to Mr. Gobiel’s leadership of the department of athletics and his contributions to increasing enrollment and fundraising and providing our student-athletes an exceptional experience.”
Gobiel, who assumes his position June 1, replaces Christine Lowthert, who was Assumption’s director of athletics since May 2020.
At Nichols, Gobiel oversees all internal and external day-to-day operations of the department’s 23 varsity athletic programs and 80 staff members. He oversaw an $8 million athletic field house renovation, a $1.2 million turf/track complex resurfacing, and baseball and softball field upgrades.
Gobiel, a 2004 graduate of Plymouth State, where he starred in lacrosse, was previously the Nichols men’s lacrosse coach. He also served as both assistant and associate director of athletics at Nichols. Gobiel earned a master’s degree from Fitchburg State.
