Yahoo Autos Aston Martin Valhalla Could Get Mercedes Power
Aston Martin has had its choice of Mercedes-Benz engines since last October.
Aston has been using Mercedes-AMG engines already.
Now the British automaker might take advantage of the arrangement and change the powertrain in its Valhalla supercar.
When Mercedes-Benz increased its stake in Aston Martin to 20 percent last fall, the deal gave Aston access to Benz’s advanced powertrain technology including hybrid and EV components. Indeed Aston was already using AMG’s 4.0-liter V8 and the Mercedes-Bosch electronic architecture in all its cars. What’s Aston’s next move? Autocar reports that Aston boss Tobias Moers, speaking to investors, said the company is not in a rush to decide which Mercedes components it will take next, but he also said Aston’s Valhalla supercar is probably going to end up with a Benz powertrain, as will more Astons going forward.
Moers said the mid-engine Valhalla supercar is still scheduled for Q3 2023, but he also said it will probably have a different drivetrain than the concept, which had a hybridized 3.0-liter turbo V6. In fact the in-house turbo V6 idea might be gone for good. A new version of the Valhalla should be ready for showing to buyers in a few months. Customers are already ordering Valhallas but Aston isn’t saying how many.
Moers also confirmed our October report that said a plug-in hybrid Aston is happening and the DBX PHEV will arrive by 2024, probably using the electrified powertrain from Mercedes-AMG. Aston has said it wants 90 percent of its model lineup to be electrified by 2030. The Valkyrie could be Aston’s first electrified car—it has a Cosworth-developed 6.5-liter V12 mated to a Rimac-supplied electric motor making 1160 hp combined.
