Will ASU or Arizona end up with a better record in 2022-23 college football season?

The Arizona State and Arizona football teams have identical 3-5 records eight games into the 2022-23 season.

That got us wondering … which Pac-12 team from Arizona will finish with a better record this season (or will they tie)?

Both the Sun Devils and Wildcats have four games remaining this season (unless both or one of them rallies for a bowl game).

Which team's schedule is more favorable down the stretch? Just how big could that regular-season finale Territorial Cup game be?

Here's a look at the remaining Pac-12 football schedule for Arizona and ASU.

Arizona football's remaining schedule

The Wildcats play at Utah this Saturday, before then playing at UCLA on Nov. 12.

They conclude the season hosting Washington State on Nov. 19 and then Arizona State on Nov. 25.

Those games at Utah and UCLA loom as very tough challenges with the Utes being 6-2 and No. 12 in the latest USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll.

The Bruins are 7-1 and ranked No. 11.

Washington State is no pushover, either. The Cougars are 4-4 on the year, but have lost three straight to USC,  Oregon State and Utah heading into a game vs. Stanford this week.

A 2-2 finish with wins over the Cougars and Sun Devils would be a good finish for the Wildcats, but an upset of Utah or UCLA would really energize the program. Of course, the Wildcats could easily go 1-3 or even 0-4 in those games, too.

Arizona State football's remaining schedule

ASU's remaining schedule is a little easier on paper than Arizona's, but still filled with difficulties.

The Sun Devils get to host UCLA this Saturday before playing at Washington State on Nov. 12.

They host Oregon State on Nov. 19,  a team that is 6-2 on the season entering its Pac-12 game against Washington on Friday.

The Beavers have a 3-game win streak going with victories over Stanford, Washington State and Colorado.

ASU gets to travel to Tucson for the rivalry game this season, which will conclude the Sun Devils' regular season.

2-2 might be a good finish for Arizona State, with losses to UCLA and Oregon State and perhaps wins over Washington State and Arizona, but all four of the Sun Devils' final four opponents are more than capable of beating ASU.

Territorial Cup game impact

The annual rivalry game between the Sun Devils and Wildcats is always huge, but it could have extra meaning on Friday, Nov. 25 this season, with the teams so close in their records.

A win in the game in Tucson could be just what both teams need to propel them into the offseason and onto the recruiting trail.

The game is scheduled for 1 p.m. MST on FS1. If you are a Wildcats or Sun Devils fan, you are probably not going to want to miss it.

Could ASU or Arizona make a bowl game?

Yes, bowl games are still possible for both the Sun Devils and Wildcats, but it would have to be considered a huge surprise if either team was able to reach the 6-win plateau to qualify for bowl game consideration.

That would require the Sun Devils or Wildcats to finish the season with three wins in their last four games.

Could Arizona win three of four against Utah, UCLA, Washington State and Arizona State?

It's not impossible, but it has to be considered highly unlikely.

Could ASU win three of four against UCLA, Washington State, Oregon State and Arizona?

Again, it could happen, but we're not exactly counting on it considering ASU's track record this season (although Trenton Bourguet has provided a spark at QB).

ASU football, Arizona football record projections

Our best guess at Arizona's final record this season? 4-8.

We're predicting losses to Utah, UCLA and Arizona State, and a win at home against Washington State with a very motivated Jayden de Laura in the game.

As for ASU, we're predicting that the Sun Devils will end the season with a 5-7 record with losses to UCLA and Oregon State, and wins over Washington State and Arizona.

No matter what their final records may be, the Sun Devils and Wildcats still have plenty to play for down the stretch of the season.
