We're just two games into the 2021-22 men's college basketball season but some people are already questioning the job security of Arizona State coach Bobby Hurley.

The Sun Devils are 1-1 on the season after losing to UC Riverside on a three-quarters court shot at the buzzer on Thursday, 66-65.

The ASU basketball coach's name shows up in several recent stories about college basketball coaches on the hot seat.

Hurley arrived at ASU for the 2015-16 season and is 105-84 during his time in Tempe. The ASU basketball program is coming off an 11-14 season.

How hot is Hurley's seat?

Here's what some college basketball writers are saying about Hurley and his job security at Arizona State:

Fansided: Bobby Hurley No. 2 on early list of coaches on the hot seat

Benjamin Zacher writes: "Year after year, it appears as if Hurley will have his most talented and best team – and this coming season may be no exception. If this past year is any indication, however, then the mixture of Hurley and talent does not always produce winning results – and with Hurley’s inability to get Arizona State out of the first round in both of his NCAA Tournament appearances, the remaining window for him may be growing even narrower."

Coaches Database: Bobby Hurley's seat at ASU is getting rather warm

It writes: "A splashy hire in 2015, Hurley was lured away from the East Coast for the first time in his coaching career after two successful seasons at Buffalo. The talent level has been strong, headlined by Remy Martin (now at Kansas) and Lu Dort (now in the NBA), but the Sun Devils have consistently underachieved under Hurley. Last year’s squad went 11-14 (7-10) despite having the 8th best recruiting class in the country featuring consensus top-30 talents in Josh Christopher and Marcus Bagley. Hurley’s deal now runs through 2023-24 after an extension two years ago and he is making a lot of money to consistently miss or early exit from the NCAAs. Hurley has to get ASU over the hump this year if he wants to keep his job."

Dan Vasta writes: "The Sun Devils had plenty of preseason hype last season, and many believed they would be a dark horse Final Four team last season. The season did not go as planned, and they went from preseason number 18, to off the national map. They finished as the four seed in the Pac-12 but had a quick exit to UCLA. The Sun Devils finished with an abysmal 11-14 record, and it was their first losing season since 2016-17, which was the second year for Hurley in Tempe. The disappointing part is there are teams like USC and UCLA that have emerged. ... Pressure is on the team after they lost Remy Martin to Kansas via transfer. Another mid-tier finish without a trip to the dance could force Hurley out the door."

Busting Brackets: Bobby Hurley among 5 coaches that need to win now

Joey Loose writes: "A year ago, Hurley was seen as a recruiting wizard, had knocked off #1 Kansas, and led the Sun Devils to continued success, but things have a way of changing in a hurry. Several Pac-12 teams had fantastic runs in last year’s NCAA Tournament and now the Sun Devils were picked to finish just 7th in the league. It’s likely too early to say that Hurley’s job is in danger, but he’s yet to win an NCAA Tournament game with some pretty strong talent. The Pac-12 is getting stronger and Arizona State can’t afford to fall into one of those lower tiers again."

CBB Review: ASU's Bobby Hurley among 5 coaches on the hot seat

It writes: "Arizona State has reached the tournament just twice in Hurley’s six-year tenure at the school. The furthest the Sun Devils have gone in the big dance is the round of 32. ASU has had more exposure and hype over the past five years, but the results have not lived up to those expectations. Hurley has been a great recruiter, bringing in big-time recruits like Josh Cristopher and Marcus Bagley to Tempe. But Remy Martin, ASU’s leading scorer last season, transferred to Kansas, which is a huge blow for Hurley this season. The Sun Devils may improve from their 11-14 record last season, but it may not be enough to save Hurley’s job without a deep tournament run."

Twitter didn't react to Bobby Hurley and the ASU basketball team's loss to UC Riverside kindly:

In Bobby Hurley's defense ...

Bobby Hurley does have some things going for him at Arizona State.

Among them is his tournament appearances.

Hurley has been at ASU for six seasons, but there was no NCAA Tournament in 2020.

His team made the NCAA Tournament is 2018 and 2019 and was in position to make it again in 2020 before COVID-19 caused the cancellation of the event.

If ASU would have been invited in 2020, it would have made it three straight tournament appearance for the Sun Devils, something the program hasn't accomplished since it went four straight years from 1961-64.

The two straight appearances under Hurley in 2018-19 were the program's first consecutive appearances in the NCAA Tournament since 1980-81.

Hurley's predecessor, Herb Sendek, led the Sun Devils to two tournament appearances in his nine seasons in Tempe.
