Alabama State University is one of five HBCUs in Alabama that will share $2.5 million from the National Parks Service to preserve historic sites on their campuses.

ASU will use the money for G.W. Trenholm Hall Preservation Project. U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell, D-Alabama, announced the funding in a statement on Friday.

The other four Alabama schools to receive money are Miles College (Williams Hall Historic Preservation Project), Selma University (preserving the Historic Dinkins Memorial Hall), Alabama A&M University (restoration and renovation of Carnegie Hall Library), and Stillman College (transforming Sheppard Library into a Civil Rights museum).

“For more than 180 years, Historically Black Colleges and Universities have provided high-level academics, opportunities, and community for generations of students,” said NPS Director Chuck Sams in a statement. “These grants enable HBCUs to preserve the noteworthy structures that honor the past and tell the ongoing story of these historic institutions.”

Each of the five schools will receive $500,000. The $2.5 million is part of a $9.7 million investment in HBCUs across the country for this preservation work, the NPS announced Friday.
