Arizona State men's swim team finishes second at NCAA Championships
The Arizona State men's swim team made history at the 2023 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships with a second-place finish over the weekend, the program's highest finish ever.
The Sun Devils had previously never finished better than sixth at the national championships, with their most recent sixth-place finish happening in 2022.
ASU scored 430 points at the championships this season, only behind champion Cal's 482 points.
The Sun Devils scored 236 points last year when they finished sixth.
The Sun Devils began their run to second place with two second-place relays in the opening night on Wednesday and closed it with 10 top-15 finishes on Saturday evening, including the third individual title this week from Léon Marchand.
Marchand took the 200 breast in NCAA record-setting time of 1:46.91, breaking his own mark of 1:47.67 that he set at the Pac-12 Championships. Marchand won the 200 IM, 200 breast and 400 IM this week in Minneapolis, setting new NCAA records in each event.
It's his fifth career NCAA title, breaking a tie with diver Joonha Pukka (4) for most in Sun Devil Men's history. It also completed a perfect season for the Toulouse, France, native, as he won all 27 individual events he raced in this year.
